Re: Wachovia Championship Cup
Both GC & PV have their work cut out for them to make it to Saturday. Chatham was a very strong team last year when GC faced them in the semi's & returned most of their team from 2004. Randolph Henry also has a very good team, defeating Chatham in the Region B finals 4-3 on Monday.
Good luck to the Devils & Vikings, it would be nice to see an all-LPD state championship final in baseball.
Re: Wachovia Championship Cup
Powell Valley and Gate City have to get through Randolph-Henry and Chatham first... I'm glad the smiley face was there for the joke!
Re: Wachovia Championship Cup
I've asked this twice but I'll ask it to you, do you know if Randolph Henry pitched Yancey today?
Re: Wachovia Championship Cup
Most of the state (other regions) know about the Wachovia Cup & consider it a great honor to win. Since it's first year in 1990, only 2 schools from Region C have won it while Regions A & B has had a school win it the other 13 years. If Gate City is able to win it this year, it would mark the first time that a Region D has won the cup.
Re: Wachovia Championship Cup
I didn't know you were asking me that question, but no I don't have the foggiest if they pitched him or not.
From what I understood from tonight, pitchers who threw in the quarterfinals are fully eligible to throw in the semi's. The VHSL rule that dictates the number of innings is no longer in effect. A pitcher can not start on consecutive days, but should still be able to start on Friday if they started tonight.
Re: Wachovia Championship Cup
I just looked into the numbers and I think you may be mistaken. At the end of winter sports, Gate City had 172.5 points with Clarke County 37.5 points behind with 135. Clarke just picked up a total of 80 points by finishing second and fourth in track giving them a lead. Clarke's boys' soccer team advanced to the final 4 by beating George Wythe tonight and is one of the favorites along with their perennial rival George Mason. Clarke's girl team is also still alive and is again one of the favorites to win the state. If both of Clarke's soccer teams win, Gate City would probably have to win a couple of state titles to win the Cup.
Re: Wachovia Championship Cup
It's a great honor to win, dont get me wrong. I would just rather win one state title than win the Wachovia Cup (winning both would be nice). I'll get blasted for this but I view accomplishments in Baseball, Basketball, and Football as bigger things than I do other sports.
Re: Wachovia Championship Cup
I for one wouldn't say anything negative about your comment. I also favor baseball/softball, basketball & football over most other sports. Regardless over what we think though, the points totals are added up for all sports that the VHSL deem valid.
Veritas' post about Clarke County having both soccer teams still in the mix as well as their softball team moving on to the semi's show what other regions have that we don't...more sports teams. The fact that no Region D team has a soccer team and very few in Region C (to my knowledge) goes to show you how difficult it is for a school to win the W-Cup without having as many sporting teams/programs as others.
Also, there is only a 5 point differential between first and second place in points awarded for the cup.
Re: Wachovia Championship Cup
Well, shucks! Hopefully it will all work out!
Re: Wachovia Championship Cup
That system is flawed. If it was left up to me they would take 8 sports 4 male and 4 female that all regions compete in. Football, Boys and Girls Basketball, Baseball, and Softball, Volleyball, and Boys and Girls Track. You should be given points for winning your district, region, and finishing in the final four of the state. Would be a much better system.
